A new calculation method for summer thermal protection taking into account future climate developments

The aim of the project is to develop a new calculation method for summer thermal protection that takes future climate developments and location factors into account. The innovative solution is going to be located between the normative solar input method (simplified method with safety factors) and a thermal building simulation (detailed but complex method).

The approach is based on two innovative parts: a building simulation with representative parameters and the derivation of a reliable design procedure from the multidimensional result space of the simulation.

The design of the summer thermal protection is done on a room-by-room basis, since the heat input and the temperature to be achieved depend on so many factors that they are not the same for any two rooms in a building. The following parameters are to be investigated in the simulation in different steps: weather data, elevation, building environment, total energy transmittance (g-value), reduction by solar shading devices (Fc-value), window area orientation, room environment, occupancy type, construction type, window area fraction, internal heat input, ratio of window area to floor area, thermal insulation, room height, solar shading control, air change rate, and ceiling slope. The parameter-dependent multidimensional result space is examined, interpolated, extrapolated and read out by an AI algorithm.
