Civil Engineering
Creating Habitats of the Future
Welcome to the web pages of the Department of Civil Engineering! Here you will find interesting facts about the department and information about studies and teaching as well as insights into our research.
Studying with us
Civil engineers erect structures of construction above and below ground, traffic route construction or hydraulic engineering; as civil engineers, they design the built environment of humankind. The main focus is on the engineering, structural analysis, functionality, cost planning and safety of a structure. In addition to conceptual design, planning, design, construction, calculation and production, civil engineers also take care of the maintenance and operation of a structure or building.
We design, control and optimise infrastructure and environmental systems, also as SmartCity components in the field of water and transport. Against the background of sustainability and quality of life, we secure the future foundations of human life. In doing so, we use measurement data, simulations, test facilities and experiments to find solutions and assess their effects on the environment and society.
With four Bachelor's and seven Master's degree programmes as well as certificate programmes, the department offers a wide range of options. Our modern, well-equipped laboratories and experimental halls enable effective networking with companies through provision of services and research projects. We guarantee studies with a high level of practical relevance. Partnerships with universities abroad also open up a wide range of opportunities for our students to gain experience abroad during their studies.
As a campus university, the RPTU offers short distances and a family atmosphere, which enables close exchange between teachers and students. And all this at the highest level, recognised both nationally and internationally. The surrounding Palatinate Forest offers numerous recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts.

Researching with us
The RPTU is a research university with international visibility. The Department of Civil Engineering makes a significant contribution to this. In research, the department is closely networked with regional, national and international partners from science and industry. Our steadily increasing volume of third-party funding underscores our outstanding position in terms of the strength and quality of our research.
Our motivation are current and socio-politically highly relevant topics such as sustainability and climate protection. Thus, the research portfolio of the Department of Civil Engineering includes projects around the building materials of the future, solutions to master the effects of climate change related weather events, infrastructural offers for the transport transition as well as the development of tools for the digital transformation in civil and environmental engineering.
At RPTU, students can immerse themselves in projects from the very beginning and participate constructively and tangibly, such as in the "Small House Village" with interdisciplinary experimental buildings. There is also plenty of room for constructive and planning creativity in test halls and laboratory facilities.
