Project:

The RESET project—Valorization of Non-Conventional Water Resources in Urban and Peri-Urban Contexts—aims to mitigate water scarcity through circular economy approaches. Its central focus lies on water reuse as well as the recovery of nutrients and energy from urban wastewater streams.

Both centralized and decentralized solutions are being investigated. These include nature-based processes—such as modified soil filtration systems—as well as technical processes, such as adsorption filters, UV-driven Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) disinfection, and struvite precipitation. In Brazil, the project is examining, among other technologies, UASB reactors combined with high-performance algal ponds. The objective is to develop scalable solutions for water reuse and resource recovery, and to compare these solutions through sustainability assessments, modeling, and life cycle analysis.

The primary focus is on the development and comparison of nature-based and technical processes for phosphorus recovery at municipal wastewater treatment plants.
