Successful kick-off event for the newly founded Helmut Bode Doctoral College at the Department of Civil Engineering

The newly founded doctoral program at the Department of Civil Engineering was officially launched on June 1 at a festive event in the Rotunda. After the welcome by the spokesperson of the program, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sabine Hoffmann and the dean of the department, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Robert Jüpner, a long-time companion of the name giver spoke about Helmut Bode's work at the University of Kaiserslautern.

In a speech that was as exciting as it was touching, Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Wieland Ramm described the beginnings of civil engineering in the Department A/RU/BI (Architecture, Spatial and Environmental Planning, Civil Engineering) and the development up to the retirement of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Helmut Bode in 2000 due to illness. Helmut Bode distinguished himself through his willingness to perform, his commitment to teaching and the promotion of young scientists, and his successes in research. Prof. em. Dr.-Ing. Wieland Ramm wished the doctoral college and its members that this spirit of Helmut Bode will continue in the newly founded college.

Subsequently, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sabine Hoffmann spoke about the planned activities.  The doctoral college is intended to be a network supporting the doctoral phase for all doctoral students at the Department of Civil Engineering. Particular emphasis will be placed on promoting the internationalization of doctoral students and on offering them the opportunity to acquire technical and methodological skills specific to civil engineering. In addition, there will be close cooperation with the TU Nachwuchsring, for which membership is being sought.

The doctoral college is financed by a contribution from the departments themselves as well as by the research focus HiPerCon (High Performance Composite Constructions - speaker Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Kurz), on which the founding initiative of the Helmut Bode doctoral college goes back.

The event in the rotunda was very well attended and in addition to the professors, the members of the doctoral college and numerous other employees of the department, Dr. Berenike Schröder, the managing director of the TU Nachwuchsring, as well as Mrs. Ilse Bode, the wife of the unfortunately too early deceased eponym Helmut Bode, were in the audience.
