Pavillon made of ultra high performance concrete

Placed on the campus of TU Kaiserslautern, the pavillon was erected on 9th May 2007. It was an interdisciplinary project between architects and civil engineers. The construction made of ultra high performance concrete is the first self-constained building in Germany, exclusively made of steel-fibre reinforced self compacting concrete with super absorbant polymers, added to reduce autogenous shrinkage.

This material enables construction engineers to design very thin construction elements with high load capacity at the same time. The 8 wing shaped columns have a wall thickness of 15 - 30 mm and demonstrate the capability of this high performance concrete.

The project was realized as a cooperation between the following departments:

- Structure based design processes (Jun. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Castorph),
- Concrete structures and structural design (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jürgen Schnell) und
- Construction material technology (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Viktor Mechtcherine).

The design of the concrete mix was made in the department Construction material technology.
